Flu, COVID-19, strep, or norovirus? Here's what's spreading

In a recent article in the Austin American-Statesman, Tera C. Brooks, MD, Family Medicine at ARC Kyle Plum Creek, shares insight on reports of flu being higher than previous years. Dr. Brooks says that instances of flu may be even higher than reported now that over-the-counter tests for flu are available and results are not documented. She says that if these tests come back positive, you can feel confident that it is flu. If you tested negative—a retest may be necessary if your symptoms continue.

Dr. Brooks also talks about flu cases compared to mold and cedar allergies or cases of strep, COVID-19, norovirus (the stomach bug), and mycoplasma pneumonia. Clinics are seeing some patients come in with both flu and strep, or flu and COVID-19, and it is possible to have both.

While flu and COVID-19 can be tested for at home, strep and pneumonia may require a visit to the clinic for diagnosis and then antibiotics. For strep and pneumonia, look out for symptoms like painful sore throat, or chest pain and a productive cough.
