Suffering from knee pain? ARC Orthopedist Dr. David Michel can help.
Today we'll be discussing different causes of knee pain and the number of treatment options available to patients to improve that pain knee. Pain may be caused by arthritis, bursitis, or inflammation of soft tissues and a number of other causes.
Symptoms of knee problems include:
- popping and clicking,
- pain with activity,
- decreased range of motion and
- stiffness with or without activity.
Patients will often realize that their activity level has declined over a long period of time without noticing. They'll find that they're beginning to have difficulty with smaller tasks even around the house like cleaning or taking long walks.
When meeting with patients I try and save surgery as a last resort. We're able to improve a majority of patients' pain without surgery, be it through physical therapy where they'll work on stretching and strengthening additionally, we do provide patients with injections into the knee which can help them decrease their pain and return to activities without invasive treatment.
We call it a replacement but in reality, it's much more of a resurfacing where we shave off the edges of the bone and then place metal caps. Between these metal caps we place a piece of plastic so that the metal does not touch. All the arthritis is gone and it's unable to return.
While knee replacement surgery is a painful recovery it's one that leads to great results. If you're able to work hard with the physical therapy and regain your range of motion your pain will improve quickly, and you'll have an outcome that allows you to do everything that you want. Together with my patients we work hard to get them back to whatever activities they want to enjoy.
If you're having knee pain, I'm happy to see you at any time to discuss the causes and surgical or non-surgical options we have to get you back to your activities as soon as possible.
