Common health concerns in newborns

"As a new parent, it's natural to feel both excited and a bit overwhelmed as you navigate your baby's early days," says Angelyn (Angel) L. Tarrant, MD, Pediatrics at ARC Round Rock. "Newborns are delicate, and it's completely normal to have concerns about their health—you're not alone in this journey!"

Here are some of the most common issues parents may encounter in their baby's first few months:

  • Jaundice: Jaundice is a condition where a baby's skin and eyes appear yellow due to high levels of bilirubin in the blood. This is common in newborns and typically resolves on its own, but in some cases, your doctor may recommend light therapy or other treatments to help manage it.
  • Feeding issues: Feeding can be a concern for many parents, especially if the infant is struggling with reflux or spitting up frequently. Some babies may also have trouble gaining weight or experience constipation, both of which could indicate underlying digestion or nutrition concerns. It's important to monitor your baby's feeding habits to ensure they are receiving proper nutrition.
  • Colic: If your baby is crying uncontrollably for no apparent reason, it could be colic. Colic typically occurs in the first few months of life and is marked by bouts of intense crying, often in the late afternoon or evening. While the exact cause is unknown, it is believed to be related to digestive issues, reflux, or food sensitivities.
  • Delicate skin: Newborns have very sensitive skin that is prone to conditions such as eczema, rash, or even yeast and bacterial infections. It's essential to use gentle products and keep your baby's skin clean and dry to avoid irritation. If you notice persistent rashes or other skin issues, speak with a pediatrician to determine if there could be an underlying condition, such as an allergy.
  • Allergies: Though rare in the early months, newborns can develop allergies to foods or environmental factors. These allergies may present as skin rashes, such as eczema, or, in severe cases, respiratory issues. Keep an eye out for any unusual reactions after introducing new foods or changes in your baby's environment.
  • Constipation and reflux: Both constipation and reflux can be common in newborns. Reflux, or frequent spit-up, happens when the contents of the stomach flow back up into the esophagus. This may cause discomfort for the infant. On the other hand, constipation may occur if your baby is not getting enough fluids or fiber, which can lead to hard stools and discomfort.
  • Newborn infections: Newborns are particularly vulnerable to infections due to their developing immune systems. Common infections include colds, flu, and more serious illnesses like bacterial infections. Preventative measures, such as regular handwashing and limiting your baby's exposure to sick individuals, can help protect against these illnesses.

Monitor your child's development

It's essential to monitor children's developmental milestones. Every baby develops at their own pace, but if you notice significant delays in activities such as smiling, cooing, or rolling over, it's a good idea to consult your pediatrician. Early intervention is crucial if any issues arise in your infant's growth and development. CDC's Developmental Milestones.

"The first few months with your newborn can be filled with uncertainties, but understanding common health concerns can help ease your worries," says Dr. Tarrant. "Always trust your instincts as a parent, and don't hesitate to consult with your pediatrician if you have any concerns about your baby's health."
