Championship Hearts Foundation (CHF) will provide free teen heart screenings at ARC clinics this summer and fall for all athletes, band members, spirit groups, and students ages 14 to 18.
There are the dates for the upcoming screenings:
Saturday, June 24 - ARC Southwest (9 am-1 pm)
Thursday, August 24 - ARC East 7th (9 am-1 pm)
Saturday, October 14 - ARC Four Points (9 am-1 pm)
Why get screened?
CHF estimates that 1 in 500 students are at risk of having hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a serious heart condition that is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes. CHF provides screenings for HCM since it rarely has any identifiable symptoms.
Anyone who participates in strenuous activities is encouraged to get their heart screened for possible deadly genetic heart conditions.
What's involved?
Athletes who attend will receive the following:
- a blood pressure exam
- non-invasive echocardiograms (ECG)
- limited 2-D Echocardiogram (ECHO), endorsed by the Texas Chapter of the American College of Cardiology and provided by volunteer local cardiologists and ARC clinical support staff.
Data collected from the CHF goes towards research into identifying certain risk factors that can lead to heart conditions.
