Mammograms are recommended for all women. The majority of women should have their first mammogram, called a baseline, between the ages of 35 and 40. This baseline mammogram will be used to compare future mammograms and assist in the detection of breast lumps and cancer. Between the ages of 40 and 50, women are encouraged to have a mammogram every 1-2 years, and after age 50, every year. If there is breast disease present in your family, talk to your doctor about a mammogram schedule. To be safe, your doctor may recommend mammograms more often.
